OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims that we have reached the singularity, and Prof. Yaniv Romano agrees that there is evidence to support this view but he draws attention to a question that is not being discussed enough: Who will verify the machine?
In an interview with The Jerusalem Post, Prof. Romano warns of the “verification burden.” AI models can produce complex results within seconds, but verifying that those results are correct and not merely “hallucinations” may require months or even years of human effort.
There is another challenge as well: if we become accustomed to letting AI do the thinking for us, we may gradually lose our own ability to investigate, solve problems, and critically evaluate results.
The role of academia today is therefore not only to develop the next technology, but also to ensure that the next generation of researchers and engineers does not lose its capacity for critical thinking.
