Congratulations to Bar Tzipori, Esti Bricker and Matanel Ohayon, undergraduate students, for winning the Outstanding Poster Award at the ISW conference held under the Systor 2025 conference, following their article published on their work supervised by Itai Dabran, Tom Sofer and Yaniv Hassidof.
SafeStep is a compact wearable system designed to help people with visual impairments identify obstacles approaching their upper body (chest and head). The system detects obstacles that traditional walking aids, such as walking sticks and guide dogs, do not detect, as they mainly alert to obstacles at ground level.
The hardware developed by the students is based on an ESP32 microcontroller, a camera, four laser range sensors and a 9-axis accelerometer. The system's unique algorithm identifies the user's walking speed through a customized step count and, using speed data and distance to the obstacle, estimates the time of impact and alerts via vibration and audio.
