Deconstructing Amazon EC2 Spot Instance Pricing, Orna Agmon Ben-Yehuda, Muli Ben-Yehuda, Assaf Schuster, Dan Tsafrir. An extended version appeared in ACM Transactions on Economics and Computation (TEAC).
This paper builds on data from two websites which are no longer active. Their data, however, is still available from SpotWatch and CloudExchange. Caveat emptor: since Amazon introduced a second Linux instance type, the SpotWatch data holds the two price histories together, and they appear like two price bands (or like a wider band, in some cases). Also, since this work first appeared, Amazon radically changed their pricing mechanism, as can be seen on the last slide of the presentation, so prices no longer change according to the mechanism described int he paper.
