The Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik (MPII) is devoted to basic
research in computer science, and in particular to the study of
complex computer systems. It is part of the computer science
infrastructure in Germany that includes the Max Planck Institute (MPII),
the German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Dagstuhl
International Conference and Research Center for Computer Science,
and the Computer Science Department at the University of Saarbrücken
(all conveniently located within direct reach of each other). MPII has
a strong international orientation and it actively promotes joint
research with international teams.
A major focus within
the Computer Graphics Group is on geometric modelling, and in particular
on multiresolution modelling, level-of-detail,
mesh reduction, and the processing of complex geometric data sets.
In this context, effective and efficient methods for the generation,
transmission, and modification of complex polygonal objects (with and
without subdivision connectivity) have been developed during recent
years.
The combination of mathematical and computer science expertise within
the group enables the effective solution of problems from the level of
theoretic foundations down to software implementation issues. The
close connections to CAD and automotive companies provides input and
(early) feedback from practitioners which is necessary in order to
adapt the research activities to realistic application scenarios.
