Light Reading

This page was updated on Fri Nov 5 00:44:24 IST 2004

Light Reading books are books to read and forget. The books you can't put aside cause you want to know how it all ends, but once you are done, the book goes to the highest book shelf and never comes down again. I read a lot of such books, just to relax from the hard day at work, from thinking all the time, to have fun and to not to watch TV. I am not against these books, on the contrary, I am a big fan of them... Here they come.
  1. Douglas Adams - The more than complete Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy August 2000 This is a great book. Well, if you didn't hear about it then you should read it. If you've read it then i can add nothing it speaks for itself.
    a must.
  2. John le Carre - Smiley's people August 2000 This is an espionash novel. Written in a good language, no action and realistic. I didn't really liked this one, its not exactly my taste.
    nothing special
  3. Clifford Simak - The Goblin Reservation - February 2001
Its a nice book, kind of a mix between science fiction and fantasy. I didn't like it especially, but its small and written nice, so i've read it. If you have spare time give it a try.
  4. Myth serie by Robert Asprin - September 2001
This is a serie of 10 stories (books if you like). Asprin promised to continue and publish at least another 2 of them, but none come out yet. Anyway, the genre is humorious fantasy. Personally, i've liked the first couple of books more than the later ones, since at the end he started to dwell into emotional and philisophycal aspects of mage and demon lifes. I don't mean that i didn't like his advices, its just that this is not what you really expect from this kind of book. Don't get the wrong impression, however, i liked the books and advice you to read them. The story is about a young mage and his teacher/partner (who happens to be a demon). They get into troubles and try to stay alive. All the adventures are with a good sense of humor and pleasable.
  5. The Chinese Nail Murders by Robert Van Gulik - July 2002
Mystery story. The story takes place in the ancient China. Judge Dee is a chinese Sherlok Holmes, sovles murder case. This is a plot, the catch is the ancient Chine authmosphere recreated to the small details. People from another society, unusual behaviour (well, for the western world) and usual feelings, usual emotional storms: love, lie and voilence. I liked it. I will read more stories about Judge Dee.
  6. Truckers by Terry Pratchet - September 2003
This is first book of nomes trilogy by Pratchet. Yes, the same Pratchet from the diskworld. Nomes are the small people living in the store. Actually the store is their whole world. Only now its closing. This is a story about one man, ehh, nome, which has to guide the nomekind from the Store to the Outside. He will lead despite all the intrigues and politics, despite the common knowledge that there is no Outside. Despite, their size. Cool book, i will buy the second book of the trilogy.
    Few quotes:
"People. We need as many as you can spare. Espessialy the ones you can't spare".
"The important thing about being a leader is not being right or wrong, but being certain. Being right, of course helps."
  7. Chinese Maze Murders - Peter Van Gulik
Judge Dee mysteries. The place: China, the time: more than 1300 years ago, the setting: there have been a murder. Amusing, refreshing and very advised.
  8. Chariot of Diamonts - Boris Akunin
This books is in russian. It is the latest item of Fandorin Project, who is a russian 19th century detective. The story takes place at Russia and Japan, it connects the storyline of the previous books of the project. Such as where Masa has come from, how come Fandorin is a marial art follower, what has happened in Japan.
Although, i feel that the quality of the story is somewhat lower than of the previous books, I've enjoyed it very much, but maybe i'm addicted.
