The Oesterreicher Family
Jacob Oesterreicher was born DATE in "Hallas," Hungary
and died in 1892 in Vienna
(according to his Vienna death record).
Jacob worked for the Austrian-Hungarian railroads.
Regine Oesterreicher-Paschkes was born in Nikolsburg (Mikulov), Moravia,
perhaps in 1832 and died in 1912.
They got married (date and place unknown)
and had six children all (with the possible exception of the oldest)
born in Vienna.
They are buried together in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof.
Their children
- Alexander (married to Maria Nagel)
- Maria (married name Burian)
- Amalia (married name Raudnitz)
- Hermine (married name Schmidt)
-
Moritz Oesterreicher, was born in 1870.
He was married to
Hermine Deutsch.
They had two sons,
Jacques and Otto .
Details of his family are to be found
there.
- Josephine Oesterreicher was the youngest, born in 1878.
In the late 1890's Josephine married
Maximilian (Max) Hofmann of Rechnitz, Austria
(Rohonc, Hungary at the time).
Max died in Wiener Neustadt around 1930.
Josephine moved to Vienna, where she was living at the time of the
Nazi Anschluss.
Moritz Oesterreicher (in Lake Placid by 1941)
tried to help get Josephine out of the country,
but all efforts were unsuccessful.
Josephine was deported from Vienna in September 1942 and
murdered in Maly Trostinec, in today's Belarus.
Blessed be her memory.
Lotte Hofmann's daughter Jennifer is named for her.
Max and Josephine settled down in Wiener Neustadt and had three children:
- Gretl Hofmann
married Vinzenz Rambauske of Vienna.
They had two sons, and all four of them survived the war.
- Hans Hofmann , born in 1901.
Eventually Hans Hofmann moved to Vienna, where he married
Lisl Hofmann-Kemeny in 1932.
Lisl was the daughter of
Alexander Kemeny(died 1964) and Helen Kemeny-Kohn (died 1970).
Lisl and Hans had one daughter
Lotte, born in Vienna in 1935.
Hans (Anglicized as John) and Lisl (Elise), together with Lotte,
then just three years old, made their way to England in early 1939
and from there to the Boston area two years later.
They were helped in reaching the US by Otto Oesterreicher, Moritz Oesterreicher's son.
(Hans) John died in 1982 and (Lisl) Lis in 1986.
Lotte passed away in 2000.
In 1957 Lotte married Paul Swartz of Lynn, MA.
They had three children, see below.
- Hilda Hofmann
married Erich Dlugacz of Vienna and they moved
to Israel before the war.
They had two sons, who subsequently moved to California.
Lotte Swartz-Hofmann's children
The three children of Lotte were all born in Schenectady, NY,
- Martin Swartz, born 1961.
In 1990 Martin married Michelle Rosenzweig of Toronto.
They have three children
- Elisehva (age 13),
- Rivka Malka (11),
- Naftali Simcha (9).
- Jennifer Swartz, born 1962
- Jonathan Swartz, born 1964.

I cannot identify the other two unnamed people in the photo, but I am quite sure that Alexander and Helen Kemeny cannot be their in-laws. One possibility is that the gentleman is Helen's cousin Robert Kohn and the woman his wife Sultana, but that's really a wild guess. In any event, Alexander and Helen were obviously very friendly with the Oesterreicher family. Alexander died in 1964, Helen in 1970.
Interestingly, Helen's cousins included Rosenfelds and Fuersts, names that I see appeared on your Deutsch family tree as well. Maybe there is more of a connection there. I can correspond with Janos about that.
