Recommendations
Barbara Tuchman (wikipedia) - American historian. I mainly liked "The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam", and also "A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous Fourteenth Century, an overview of 14th Century medieval Europe" and the "The Guns of August".
Ken Follett (wikipedia) - I loved "The Pillars of the Earth". It is a great historical novel about 12th century England, written in a style of Sir Walter Scott ("Ivanhoe", "Rob Roy"). And now - "World Without End".
Umberto Eco - I liked "Baudolino", "The Name of the Rose" and "The Island of the Day Before".
