Talk of interest | |
When: Sunday June 16, 11:30 Where: Bloomfield 527 (Industrial Engineering & Management) Who: Ariel Procaccia, CMU Hosts: Reshef Meir and Inbal Talgam-Cohen Title: Putting Ethical AI to the Vote Abstract: I will present the 'virtual democracy' framework for the design of ethical AI. In a nutshell, the framework consists of three steps: first, collect preferences from voters on example dilemmas; second, learn models of their preferences, which generalize to any (previously unseen) dilemma; and third, at runtime, predict the voters' preferences on the current dilemma, and aggregate these virtual 'votes' using a voting rule to reach a decision. I will focus on two instantiations of this approach: a proof-of concept system that decides ethical dilemmas potentially faced by autonomous vehicles, and a decision support tool designed to help a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit allocate food donations to recipient organizations. These projects bridge AI, social choice theory, statistics, and human-computer interaction; I will discuss challenges in all of these areas. Brief bio: Ariel Procaccia is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He works on a broad and dynamic set of problems related to AI, algorithms, economics, and society. His distinctions include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2018), the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award (2015), a Sloan Research Fellowship (2015), an NSF CAREER Award (2014), and the IFAAMAS Victor Lesser Distinguished Dissertation Award (2009). To make his research accessible to the public, he has founded the not-for-profit websites Spliddit.org and RoboVote.org, and has written op-eds for the Washington Post, Wired, and Bloomberg (where he is a regular contributor). |

Peer Reviews | |
Due to my inability to remember to assign peer reviewers at the beginning of each talk, I've prepared a list of assignments for the remaining 5 weeks. If you are unable to attend your assigned slot please switch with a friend. (Reminder: A "peer review" is constructive feedback that doesn't pass through me but straight from student to speaker, with the goal of pointing out her strengths as a speaker and what she can improve in the student's opinion.) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Nq2LAURD7bxEHxmtp0JRCjOGCf9RJOfiaB6Q8xfJS7s/edit?usp=sharing |

Post-Passover announcements
A quick reminder that next week we will have 2 meetings - one on Sunday April 28 at 16:30 (Taub 8) and one on Monday April 29 at 9:30 as usual. The first talk will be by Shai and Peleg and the second by Hadas and Gal. The following week there is no class. The criteria I am using for grading the talks: Presentation (organization of the material, time planning, coordination with partner) Going beyond the paper to textbooks and related literature (e.g. to understand mathematical concepts, motivation etc.) Slides (accuracy, clarity) How well the student understood the paper (e.g. ability to answer questions in class, connecting to other material from the seminar, etc.)* *For the last point, please make sure to include enough technical content in the presentation so that I can see you achieved a good understanding of the techniques. Feedback in words has now been sent to all speakers so far, the final grade will be given at the end of the course. I may have posted this in the past but here is a guide to effective reading of a CS theory paper: https://cs.stanford.edu/~rishig/courses/ref/paper-reading-overview.pdf https://cs.stanford.edu/~rishig/courses/ref/paper-reading-technical.pdf |

Workshop on Learning in Presence of Strategic Behavior
*************************************** Workshop on Learning in Presence of Strategic Behavior EC 2019 (collocated with FCRC 2019) June 28, 2019 at Phoenix, AZ, USA Submission deadline: May 1. *************************************** [Apologies if you already received this email] The first ACM EC Workshop on Learning in Presence of Strategic Behavior will be held in conjunction with ACM Federated Computing Research Conference (FCRC) 2019, Phoenix, Arizona on June 28, 2019. The main goal of this workshop is to address current challenges and opportunities that arise from interactions of learning systems with social and strategic agents. This workshop aims at bringing together members of different communities; including economics, machine learning, theoretical computer science, and social computing; to share recent results, discuss important directions for future research, and foster collaborations. In particular, we expect our workshop to be of interest to the larger research community present at ACM FCRC 2019, including participants of EC, COLT, and STOC. The workshop will include 4-5 invited talks by experts from machine learning, theoretical computer science, economics, and operations research, as well as contributed talks and posters. ******* Call for Papers******* Papers from a rich set of theoretical and applied perspectives are invited. Some areas of interest at the interface of learning and strategic behavior include, but are not limited to: 1. Learning from data that is produced by agents who have vested interest in the outcome or the learning process. Examples of this include learning a measure of quality of universities by surveying members of the academia who stand to gain or lose from the outcome, or when a GPS routing app has to learn patterns of traffic delay by routing individuals who have no interest in taking slower routes. 2. Learning a model for the strategic behavior of one or more agents by observing their interactions. Examples of this include applications of learning in economic paradigms. 3. Learning as a model of interactions between agents. Examples of this include applications to swarm robotics, where individual agents have to learn to interact in a multi-agent setting in order to achieve individual or collective goals. 4. Interactions between multiple learners. Examples of this include scenarios where two or more learners learn about the same or multiple related concepts. How do these learners interact? What are the scenarios under which they would share knowledge, information, or data. What are the desirable interactions between learners? ******* Submissions Guidelines ******* We solicit submission of published and unpublished works. For the former, we request that the authors clearly state the venue of previous publication. Authors are also encouraged to provide a link to an online version of the paper (such as on arXiv). If accepted, such papers will be linked via an index to give an informal record of the workshop. This workshop will have no published proceedings. Accepted submissions will be presented as posters or talks. Submissions can be made in any format and length, but have to be accompanied by a one page summary of the paper, its contributions, and relevance to the workshop (this applies to previously published papers as well). The review process is not blind. All submissions will be made through EasyChair on or before May 1, 2019, 11:59pm AoE. Notification of acceptance will be on May 20, 2019. Submissions will be evaluated based on their relevance to the theme of the workshop and the novelty of the work. ******* Important Information ******* Submission Deadline: May 1, 2019, 11:59pm AoE Submission page: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eclearning2019 Notification: May 15, 2019 Workshop Date: June 28, 2019 ******* Workshop Registrations ******* Please refer to the EC 2019 website for registration details. ******* Organizing Committee ******* Omer Ben-Porat, Technion Nika Haghtalab, Microsoft Research and Cornell University Yishay Mansour, Tel Aviv University Tim Roughgarden, Columbia University ******* More Information ******* For more information, visit the workshop website: https://sites.google.com/view/eclearning2019/ All questions about submissions should be emailed to: ueclearning2019ateasychair.org |

Working individually vs. in pairs - clarification
Every week a pair of students will present a paper. Each student prepares his/her own presentation and is graded separately, but you must coordinate who covers which part of the paper, and are required to have a joint practice session with each other a day or so before the lesson in which you present. |
