Abstract:


The talk will focus on teaching and learning computer science in schools
(and even at younger ages), in Israel and abroad. We will describe
curricula, teacher training programs, and educational ventures. We will also
discuss the connections between learning computer science at school and
learning it in academia.

The talk is in two parts:

Part 1: Teaching computer science, in Israel and abroad (Prof. Orit Hazzan)

Part 2: Principles in teacher training for computer science, and the new
pedagogical knowledge required for teaching the discipline (Dr. Noa Ragonis)

Short Bios:

Associate Professor Orit Hazzan is the head of the Technion's Department of 
Education in Science and Technology.  Her research focuses on computer science 
and software engineering education in general, and specifically, teaching 
human aspects of software engineering.  As part of her activities, she promotes 
collaboration among the academia, the hi-tech industry, IDF and the education 
system, with respect to science and technology education.  
During 2005-2007 she served as the vice dean of the Technion undergraduate 
studies, and during 2006-2010 she headed a committee, assigned by the ministry of
education, whose role was to scrutinize the high school computer science curriculum 
and update it according to new developments in the field.  Currently, she heads the 
Samuel Neaman Institute's Forum on Science and Technology Education.
Professor Hazzan has published about 100 papers in refereed journals and conference 
proceedings and 3 books.

Dr. Noa Ragonis is a member of the Computer Science Education group at the Department 
of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science Israel. She is also a lecturer 
of computer science at the Beit Berl College Israel and serves as the head of the 
computer science in education department.  Her main interest is computer science education.
