The terms Redshift and Blueshift capture an significant change in the way companies use their IT infrastructure and the role of IT in the business. We give a definition of Redshift and Blueshift that captures this difference and then explore the characteristics of data centers built for these different types of roles. In particular, the architecture data centers targeted for these two different roles is quite different. One illuminating way to explore the these differences is by looking how virtualization enters into the data center architecture and to compare the different virtualization approaches taken by different data centers.
