>From Klitos Kyriacou via accu-general list. Hi, My hard disk failed this morning - well, actually it was like a "graceful degradation" whereby an increasing number of applications started crashing. After running CHKDSK I managed to get it into a state where I could reboot and see what went wrong. I ran Event Viewer and noticed that there were hundreds of System Event logs telling me that there were bad sectors on the disk. Going further back in time, I found this warning System Event: "The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp." Note, that was just an entry in the event log. Thanks Microsoft! I would have expected an event of this seriousness to be displayed in big bright red letters in front of me with a button labelled "Yes I WILL get a new hard drive!" But no, just a System Event that went totally unnoticed until it was too late. The moral: check your system logs using the Event Viewer applet regularly! There may be something very serious in there. Does anyone know of any utilities that check the system logs automatically for you? Cheers, Klitos
