| Abstract: | The main claim in this paper is that Waw Consecutive in Tiberian vocalization system is always a consonant. We show that the pronunciation of Waw consecutive as 'u' in certain cases is a graphemic rather than phonemic representation, but thus 'u' should be understood as 'wu'. Our chain of proving this claim runs over two morphophonemic rules, which seem to be the main rules of the morphology of the Hebrew language. Firstly we check the set of particles in Hebrew, then we reveal the two main rules, , we show that they affect the word when prefixes are attached to the base form, as well as when particles are attached too. Then we look at these rules, how they act on the waw consecutive, and find out that the problem of 'u' is a graphemic phenomenon. Later we quote some existing literature published in Hebrew, and conclude with some remarks about Hebrew linguistic work done abroad. |
