CGGC Seminar: Hierarchical Volumetric Modeling as a Base for Multiscale Physical Based Analysis and Design of Porous Structures

Hierarchical modeling is often applied in fields such as computer vision, computer graphics, computer-aided geometric design, cartography and virtual reality. The importance of this approach has increased in recent years due to the ability to create models with more details. Hierarchical modeling is useful in order to make storage, transmission, computation, and visualization of these models possible and more efficient. The most prevalent 3D hierarchical geometric data structure is the Octree. In this research, the Octree data structure is utilized to generate intermediate structural levels which are equivalent to zooming from a dense macro-scale structure to an identifiable group of structural component, and finally to a singular structural block at the micro-scale level. However, a multiscale physical model cannot be based solely on the geometrical model. The model is incomplete without the local mechanical properties for each intermediate level. Therefore, a computational finite element model that integrates geometric and mechanical properties is also proposed.

In this talk, we demonstrate a feasibility of the method on two examples from the fields of bio-engineering and bio-medicine. First example demonstrates multiscale finite element analysis of trabecular bone structure and the second example shows application of the method for design of porous micro-scale scaffolds.
